Mini Painted Rock Cactus Craft + Decor - Behind the Camera and Dreaming

Mini Painted Rock Cactus Craft + Decor

Wednesday, August 30, 2017

As a part of Oriental Trading's Ambassador Program, I was provided with the supplies for this craft.

I have slowly been working on bringing a little life to what I plan to be Jonah's homework area in our eat-in kitchen area - I'm not exactly sure what you call it. The place where our table lives.... Anyway, several months ago, we converted our old "side table" into a kids table and I added a couple of chairs. I will show you the final when it's finished, but I couldn't wait to show our first little addition to the space.

I have been seeing these little cactus rocks all over Pinterest and thought this would be the perfect project where I could let the kids be creative AND we could use it as decor to mimic my decor on the other side of the room.

Here's what you need to create this project:

We found all of our supplies here.
  • Rocks
  • Mini Terra Cotta Pots
  • Moss (or rocks are more fitting but the moss seemed a little more 2-year-old friendly)
  • Acrylic Paint
  • Paint Brushes or Sponge Brushes

How you make your cacti is completely up to you! While the kids painted, we talked about their colors and what they were mixing. Ezra painted his rocks 3-4 times with different colors individually. You can see how his rocks turned out to be a dark green. Jonah mixed green and white, as well as, green and yellow to create his brighter rocks. After letting our painted rocks dry in a box over night, Jonah and I worked on their prickly pieces and stuff the pots with moss and arranged the rocks.

They are simple but so cute and inviting in the kid's corner fo the kitchen.

I not-so secretly want to do this project again on my own for a little rock garden for my desk since we still have some supplies. I see an adults only rock painting night in my future!

I can't wait to show you the rest of the homework station, but it's just not quite done yet! Tell what are your must-haves for your kid's desks?

I love the communication and connections one simple comment on a blog can bring. Lifetime friendships are formed, grown, and flourished in this little box. So, basically the pressure is on ;)
